The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Washington, DC (YNPNdc)’s mission is to elevate, energize, and educate the Washington DC Metro nonprofit community by sharing resources, building skills, and fostering connections. Our Board of Directors leads our community of 30+ volunteers in all aspects of the organization’s programming, communications, membership services, and strategic visioning and implementation.
This is an opportunity to be part of a community of passionate individuals looking to make a difference for peers in the nonprofit space. We are especially eager to bring in new Directors seeking to contribute time and energy (3 hours / week) to our commitment to equity, volunteer coordination, and organizational/Board development.
Directors will have an opportunity to lead a volunteer committee, play an integral role in strategic planning, and serve a local audience of 2,500+ plugged into the YNPNdc network. Board Members are expected to commit to at least a two-year term.

Our organization is run entirely by passionate volunteers and Board Members who dedicate their time and expertise to our mission. The Director of Recruitment and Retention is responsible for overseeing YNPNdc’s volunteer management strategy. This position will lead in the vision, development, and execution of recruitment and retention initiatives that align with YNPNdc’s mission and vision. The Director also serves as Chair of the Volunteer Engagement Committee, leading a team of talented volunteers to execute YNPNdc’s recruitment and retention strategy.
Primary Responsibilities
Recruitment
- Manages the annual board member recruitment process in conjunction with the Volunteer Engagement and Governance Committees, working to fill board roles throughout the year should vacancies arise.
- Collaborates with Board Members to interview and onboard volunteers for their respective committees.
- Alongside the DEI Committee, incorporates a comprehensive DEI strategy into the recruitment process
- Manages the recruitment, onboarding and offboarding of volunteers and board members
Retention
- Oversees a volunteer committee responsible for planning and executing activities to foster volunteer retention and relationship-building, including but not limited to newsletters to volunteers, providing professional development resources, quarterly social engagement events and more.
- Works closely with Board Members to ensure they have the resources to effectively lead their committee volunteers, providing support with volunteer management and communication where needed.
- Maintains an updated board and volunteer roster.
- Implements exit surveys to collect valuable data from volunteers and board members at the end of their term.

As a young professional organization, YNPNdc is committed to providing opportunities for young and/or aspiring nonprofit professionals to develop the skills needed to advance their nonprofit careers. As such, the qualifications below are not required to apply for the position, but applicants should have interest in gaining experience and/or further advancing their knowledge in these areas:
- Expertise in non-profit recruitment, volunteer management, and/or operations.
- Experience effectively managing multiple projects at a time.
- Experience leading and managing a team, including working collaboratively across teams.
- Strong ability to listen deeply and create space for open conversation and learning.
- Proficient in critical thinking and creative problem-solving.
- Organized and detail oriented.
