The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Washington, DC (YNPNdc)’s mission is to elevate, energize, and educate the Washington DC Metro nonprofit community by sharing resources, building skills, and fostering connections. Our Board of Directors leads our community of 30+ volunteers in all aspects of the organization’s programming, communications, membership services, and strategic visioning and implementation.
This is an opportunity to be part of a community of passionate individuals looking to make a difference for peers in the nonprofit space. We are especially eager to bring in new Directors seeking to contribute time and energy (5 hours / week) to our commitment to equity, volunteer coordination, and organizational/Board development.
Directors will have an opportunity to lead a volunteer committee, play an integral role in strategic planning, and serve a local audience of 2,500+ plugged into the YNPNdc network. Board Members are expected to commit to at least a two-year term.

In this volunteer role, the Director of Communications is responsible for creating and ensuring the implementation of YNPNdc’s overall communications strategy and leads a talented team of volunteers that comprise the Communications Committee. This position is a member of the Board of Directors for YNPNdc, and as such, entails working collaboratively with the full Board to ensure the success of the organization.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee all communication-related activities, ensuring that projects are on track, communications tasks are completed on time and that the organization’s message is consistently conveyed.
- Creates or updates a communications, marketing, and brand strategy for the organization in partnership with the Communications Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Creates and regularly updates the content calendar, ensuring all communications requests are responded to, delegated, and executed in a timely manner.
- Serves as Chair of the Communications Committee, which entails overseeing the team of communications volunteers who are responsible for executing the strategy.
- Committee responsibilities include, but are not limited to, email communications, social media, website management, media relations, blog, graphic design and photography.
- Maintain regular communication with committee volunteers, ensuring that volunteers are knowledgeable about the content calendar and have the information they need to be successful in their roles.
- Fills in for committee volunteer responsibilities in the event that a volunteer is unable to meet their deadline,
- Ensures all of YNPNdc’s communications are grounded in a foundation of equity and inclusion.
- Provides communications expertise and recommendations to the Board as needed for ongoing and ad hoc programming, including fundraising and development.
- Ensures the Communications Committee is fully informed of Board updates and advocates for the needs of committee volunteers.
- Troubleshoots and proposes solutions to any challenges that may arise in communications processes.

As a young professional organization, YNPNdc is committed to providing opportunities for young and/or aspiring nonprofit professionals to develop the skills needed to advance their nonprofit careers. As such, the qualifications below are not required to apply for the position, but applicants should have interest in gaining experience and/or further advancing their knowledge in these areas:
- Passion for YNPNdc’s mission and vision.
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Expertise in managing nonprofit communications and processes
- Strong ability to effectively delegate, communicate expectations, and manage a project team of 5 or more volunteers.
- Experience working collaboratively across multiple teams.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Ability to dedicate time to the position and organization (3 or more hours per week).
- Knowledge of CRM and software programs such as WordPress, Mailchimp, MemberPress and AirTable
